Aston Villa lifted a European trophy in May, then watched half that winning squad walk out the door by August. Two games into the new season, Unai Emery's rebuilt side are still searching for their first point after Bukayo Saka's second-half goal sealed a 1-0 win for Arsenal at Villa Park.

Arsenal Make It Two From Two

Saka struck just before the hour mark on Monday night, and it was enough. The win backs up Arsenal's opening-day 3-0 win over Coventry City and gives Mikel Arteta's side back-to-back clean sheets to start the season.

It wasn't a classic. Arsenal had 61% of the ball but only managed two shots on target all game. Villa matched them shot for shot, seven each, but couldn't hit the target once.

The Goal

Saka's goal came in the 59th minute, his second in as many league games, finishing from close range after Eberechi Eze and Riccardo Calafiori combined in the build-up.

Villa's best chance came early. Emiliano Buendia's shot came back off the bar in the 12th minute, the closest either side got to a goal in a tight first half.

A Squad Rebuilt From Scratch

Aston Villa are the reigning Europa League champions. They beat Freiburg 3-0 in the final back in May, their first major trophy since 1996. Then came the summer clear-out.

Morgan Rogers left for Chelsea. Lucas Digne joined Paris Saint-Germain. Youri Tielemans moved to Manchester United. Ezri Konsa, who left Villa for Arsenal this summer, came off the bench to a warm reception from the home fans as he faced his old club.

Ollie Watkins, Villa's top scorer last season, was left out of the squad completely amid strong transfer interest from Saudi club Al-Hilal.

In goal, new arrival Zion Suzuki made his first Premier League start for Villa, taking over between the posts from longtime No.1 Emiliano Martinez. Suzuki denied Kai Havertz with a smart save and had the home fans singing his name by the final whistle. Alejandro Garnacho, one of Emery's headline summer signings, started in attack alongside Nicolas Jackson, while Pau Torres and Ross Barkley anchored a much-changed side.

Arsenal's Title Defence Rolls On

Arteta kept the same starting eleven that beat Coventry, and it worked again. The result was also a personal milestone: his 250th league game in charge of Arsenal.

Bruno Guimaraes, signed from Newcastle this summer, made his first Premier League appearance for the club off the bench. Declan Rice and Ben White both started, with White at the centre of a late penalty shout for holding Ian Maatsen that the referee waved away.

Arsenal sit second, only behind Man City on goal difference. Aston Villa are bottom of the table, level on points with Tottenham.

New faces are already making an impact. Suzuki's Villa debut and Guimaraes' first Arsenal appearance both caught the eye.
